Pokutska ceramics. Peculiarities.

Pokutska ceramics is typical aesthetically treated terracotta. That is natural earthenware with porous structure with no glaze covering.  Due to this “shortcoming”, the dishware breathes and that is why it is called live dishware. This peculiarity has as advantages so disadvantages.

Advantages
Natural dishware is the best dishware even for inexperienced hostess. A pot absorbs a surplus of liquid through its pores during preparation of food and then returns water back in food step by step and so food does not burn and it means a preparation without excessive fat. Clay accumulates warm and does not give it back immediately and it means that food stews but does not boil or bake and food is more delicious.
Thermoregulation is the other advantage of live dishware. It keeps a temperature like a thermos: a cool drink keeps its freshness under the sun, tea or coffee leaves hot during four hours, coffee pot pulled off from fire will be thermal active for some time.
Earthenware safes products perfectly: salt and sugar do not get wet; milk does not turn sour several days; jam and pickles do not get moldy even if they are uncovered.
Natural microflora of products is safe, healthy and sweet smell is exuded during fermentation. Also clay is a perfect material for saving bread or baking and neither wood nor linen nor metal nor glass nor synthetic can do it better than live ceramic. For example, fresh baked bread does not get wet in terracotta and therefore does not get moldy from excessive humidity and more over bread does not get stale from dryness for weeks.

Some words of ecological characteristics.
The question of healthy food is very important nowadays. This theme is one of the most important issues in the world on par with AIDS problem and problems of natural eco-catastrophes. However, very often research characteristics of balanced nutrition do not include the material of dishware and it is wrong, because it is very important component. If children can be poisoned by Chinese toys only playing with them but what can we expect from food in such plastic? Therefore the question of ecological dishware is very timely.  Ceramic dishware is made of natural material which contains healthy powerful energy of Earth. Some people suggest, that the clay has own special bio field. The clay contains all necessary mineral salts and microelements and there is a medical area called bolostherapy (Latin: bolos is clay and terpeia is therapy). It uses absorbing clay properties which have a medical effect so folk healers steam drinks in clay pots, but it is true concerning to terracotta only. If dishware is covered by glaze then an interaction between dishware and medical potion becomes impossible.
There is another very important aspect.
From bottom to crown, earthenware is the creation of Master. It is unique. Handmade ware is valued very high in men-made world, where everything stamps by soulless machines. And it is not an attempt to follow the fashion but accepting of reality. Science has admitted that world consists of visible and invisible matters. Extrasensory is usual phenomenon now like cosmonautics. An efficiency of alternative medicine is higher than official medicine for many people and their amount is increasing nowadays. What is the cause of it? The answer is that the man intensively contacts with external world, absorbs and gives back live energy on especial certain level and it is a base of studies and phenomenal success of folk healers and it is a base for craftsmen popularity such as potters.
During ware making a Master puts his feelings and thoughts into his own ware, in other words his own live energy. Everyone who had deal with potter’s wheel was able to feel an amazing appeasement even if he was angry or sad before. It is impossible to make a pot or to sculpt a cup handle with gloomy thoughts. They become joyous by themselves. This unique characteristic of a creative work is used for art therapy or medicine pedagogy. Work with clay influences on psychics and excites a harmony in mind. People say, potter is a good man, because if he is a bad men his pots would split up.

Disadvantages
Kitchen utensils need especial treatment. Pores of pot are open without glaze. It means that during cooking the clay absorbs microelements of food and a pot acquires a smell of food and can get mouldy and sometimes necessary to dry a dishware after washing in order to avoid getting mouldy and therefore pots which are dried on the fence became a romantic symbol of Ukraine.
Terracotta like any earthen ware does not endure a sharp temperature drop, so cold pots must not put into hot oven or put them on open flame because pots can be split up.
Other disadvantage of live ceramics is an ability to absorb water. If you pour water into unglazed pot and leave it for a night the pot is covered by dew.  So this ware can not be used for keeping of wet filling, e.i. like a flowerpot, because ware is covered by moldy. For avoiding this problem ware is covered by glaze. Lead glazing is very popular method among potters but the question of ecological standards of lead glazing is still opened. After glazing ware lose an advantage of live ceramics. Therefore we  found and revived old recipe of glaze substitute – hot waxing. Waxing is rather labour-intensive and cost-based process and the price of ware increases on UAH 10-15 but ecological purity of components is obviously.
